Liposuction

Posted by Nits in Health on November 23rd, 2009. No Comments »

Liposuction, also referred to as lipoplasty and liposculpture suction lipectomy, is a cosmetic surgery procedure which permanently removes fat through a suctioning process. Among the body parts that are commonly affected are the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, back of the arms and even the neck.

The technique involves the removal of fat via a cannula under a vacuum.  Prior to surgery, anticoagulants are not allowed to be taken for two weeks. In case the patient needs to be sedated, and the procedure will be performed in the morning, fasting is required from midnight the night before the surgery. If only local anesthesia will be used, fasting is not required. On the day of the surgery, the patient signs a consent form and may opt for photographs to be taken of the areas to be treated for comparison purposes. In the operating room, the target areas are sterilized and a local anesthetic is injected. The surgeon then makes small incisions, roughly a quarter of an inch. The patient will feel a slight rasping sensation from the movement of the cannula.

Recovery period depends on the extent of the liposuction, but most patients return to school or work after two days or up to two weeks at the most. The patient is also required to don a compression bandage between two weeks to a month. Any post-operative pain is controlled by medication; bruising will disappear after a few days while swelling normally subsides in two weeks to two months.

The result will be evident from one to six months following surgery but obvious difference will be noticed by the patient within days or weeks as inflammation subsides.
