Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius was given a complete facelift for 2010. But it remains a four-door hatchback that accommodates five passengers. The Prius’ hybrid powertrain features a 1.8-liter gasoline engine that generates 98 hp and 105 lb-ft of torque that’s utilized in tandem with two electric motors and a planetary gearset that operates as a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Under full throttle, both power sources work together but under lighter load conditions, the Prius vacillates between the two, often relying on battery power alone. This maximizes the car’s fuel economy potential. The Prius’ regenerative braking system transforms energy typically lost as heat into electricity to charge the car’s battery pack. It is more fuel-efficient, but with an EPA combined fuel economy projection of 50 mpg — which is the best in the hybrid models.

The interior was endowed with a more profound overhaul, with a more traditional center control stack than the old model. The hybrid system display was relocated high up on the dash adjacent to the digital speedometer, while stereo and climate controls are laid out in a traditional manner with physical buttons instead of a touchscreen. The result is a car that’s easier to get adjusted to. It’s also has a height-adjustable seat and a telescoping steering wheel.

The new Toyota Prius is a more “normal” car to drive, making it easier to transition from a conventional car.

Kia K2900

Kia’s K2900 is Australia’s least expensive light truck and has outsold its rivals for the last six years in the country.

The K2900 has a 2.9 liter 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine which is a welcome improvement over the 2.7 liter engine in its predecessor, the K2700. The engine has 92 kW of power and 245 Nm of torque. The figures may not sound very impressive but once you hop on the K2900, you’ll probably won’t crave for more.

The cabin of the K2900 offers excellent visibility and parking this truck is quite easy owing to the absence of a bonnet in front of the cabin and the fact that you’re sitting above the rear tray. The dashboard features silver metallic looking plastic surrounding the HVAC and audio controls. Other interior features include individual driver’s bucket seat offering slide and recline movement with the passenger and center seat being a joined bench set up. The K2900 also comes with standard air conditioning, AM/FM radio, single CD player and 2 speakers.

The rear tray of the K2900 is pretty impressive as the rear and side gates can easily be dropped or removed to provide a perfectly flat bed. The tray’s dimensions of 3,110 mm in length and 1,630 mm in width are by far better than its competitors. The payload is 1,481kg with the tray fitted and its fuel economy is pegged at 10.2 liters per 100 kms.

Standard equipments include power windows, remote keyless entry and a CD stereo. Uplevel models feature a power driver’s seat, leather upholstery and heated front seats.

The exterior of the PT Cruiser hazily bears resemblance to a panel truck from the 1930s, coupled with street-rod looks from the 1950s. The PT Cruiser’s unique look is largely attributed to its bulging fenders, fender-mounted headlights and taillights, and an eggcrate grille. Another characteristic feature is its peculiar slant, which makes the Cruiser appear like it’s leaning forward. Crafted on a 103-inch wheelbase, the PT Cruiser is 168.9 inches long and stands 63 inches tall.

Although the base-engine is quite modest, its performance exceeds expectations. The PT Cruiser offers excellent handling, it maneuvers smoothly and can navigate corners with awesome speed. Overall, the PT Cruiser is remarkably easy to drive.
