Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also called reduction mammoplasty is a surgical procedure performed for patients with large breasts. It can be done by excising skin, fat, glandular tissue or existing breast implants.  As with breast augmentation, the procedure is usually performed on women whose large breasts may be causing problems such as neck and back pain, poor self-esteem or having a tough time wearing  or shopping for certain clothes.

There are currently a number of techniques in performing breast reduction but most of the approaches involve an incision that leaves a scar around the nipple-areola complex and on the lower half of the breast. Most patients find the scar quite unsightly. However, there are three notable approaches that offer excellent outcomes. First is the Bennelli technique which is typically performed on breasts that only call for slight lifting and little reduction of breast tissue. The other one is the Hall-Findlay technique which uses the “lollipop” incision around the areola and vertically down to the crease under the breast. The incision in the inframammary crease is eliminated and results in a perky breast shape. The last one is the inferior pedicle technique, sometimes called as a keyhole, inverted-T, or Wise pattern reduction. This is a common choice among women with the largest and droopiest breasts.

Regardless of the chosen technique, breast reduction is performed for the relief of symptoms and the reduction of the breast to a more manageable size and shape. Following breast reduction surgery, the size, shape and appearance of the breast may not be as natural or aesthetic as anticipated but as a whole, the results are quite favorable and most patients are happy and satisfied.
