First used by cheerleaders during the 1930s, Pom poms or pom pons, back then, were only made of crepe paper and was hard to be taken care of. Back then, it was not unusual for pom poms to have the strands falling out or the colors running down when exposed to moisture.

Because the first pom poms were so fragile, Fred Gastoff created a vinyl version of the pom poms.
