If you’ve noticed that your house becomes unbearably hot in summer and freezing cold in winter, it’s quite likely that you don’t have ceiling insulation installed. This means that your house is not only uncomfortable to live in but you are surely incurring additional cost in terms of energy expenditure for both cooling and heating. Moreover, utilizing more power and burning gas generates carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, so you’re not doing any good to the environment either.
Studies show that in houses without insulation, as much as 40% of summer heat gains and winter heat losses occur through the ceiling. Therefore, insulating it is one of the best investments you can make because it can pay for itself in the long run by reducing your energy bills.
Ceiling insulation works by minimizing the heat transfer through your home: in summer from the cool interior of your home to the warm surroundings outside, and vice versa in winter. There are different types of materials that can be used for ceiling insulation such as batts, blankets, wool, and reflective materials such as aluminum. However, one of the most efficient and cost effective materials is cellulose. It relies on small pockets of air trapped by the fibres, which reduce heat transfer and provide a physical barrier to radiation.
